I had enumerable calls inquiring dates of Kambala this year. Since many of you are interested in taking photographs of Kambala which is traditional traditional buffalo-race held in different places of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, I have collected dates from the Kambala Samithi which organizes them every year at 18 different places. Most of them fall either on Saturday or Sunday. The traditional Kambalas are not held on Amavasya (New Moon) and Sankramana days. If you are interested in either watching or photographing them, please visit them.

  1. What is the usual time of day it is held?morning or evening?how to know the event schedule at a particular place ?

  2. Srikanth,
It is full day affair some time lasting over 2-3 days. Depends on the number of buffaloes. Our Moodabidri Kambala which you can see in the photographs lasted over 72 hours as they had over 300 pairs of buffaloes to race. Main events are at Dusk to dawn. So you have a liberty to choose time of the day to shoot appropriate to the lighting setting. Even though the Kambala field is flood lit by halogen lights, light is insufficient (unless you have fast lens) to take night photography at high speed at reasonable ISO.

  3. Congratulation! Dr.Krishna Mohan I have seen the photographs of kambala race shot by you, artisticaly well composed, action/moment captured at right time, good exposure, splash of water and also I liked other photos shot by you, apart from busy medical practising schedule you are doing the photography I realy appreciate you and your work.I wish all the best for your further photographic work.
