Good Bye 17-40

Today I sold my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM and purchased a second Hand Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM. This was a very nice lens on with very exciting ultra wide 17mm to boring 40mm range. I didn’t find it useful on a cropped body like Canon EOS 40D but very useful range in Canon EOS 5D mark II.

  1. Shiva,
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L I USM gives 1mm more wide, 1 stop more light than 70-40mm. Flare seems to be slightly more. Barrel distortion is more prominent at 16mm (expected).
Results are superb in fact look far better than Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. I am versy satisfied. Most importantly it is THE most expensive($1350) lens in my arsenal in $ terms. But since i got it second hand I am happy to own. I wouldn’t have purchased it first hand at that cost. More so with the newer version which is available now Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is 150$ more and has 82mm (up from 77mm in version I) front diameter making most my filters unsuitable.
