Much like a magician, conjuring up images of wonder out of seemingly empty space, Artist Vinay Hegde brought forth intricate portraits, themes and images using nothing more than a humble flashlight on a light sensitive screen, in the midst of a dark hall, during a show on glow art held at Alva’s on the 12th of January, 2014.
I watched, awe inspired as sudden beams of colored light pierced through the pitch black darkness, undulating on the canvas as the first images slowly started taking shape. And even though the golden hued, green tinged images lasted for only a precious few moments, they will remain forever etched in the minds of hundreds of fascinated viewers.
Starting off with a portrait of notable engineer and celebrated scholar, Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshwariah, the Sirsi-born artist proceeded to lavishly illustrate the ten incarnations of the Hindu deity Vishnu – all this to a backdrop of soothing classical music and thunderous applause of a moved audience.
Next, as the pious forms faded away, a Yakshagana artist – the glow of his haunting eyes intensified, like lights from a thousand suns – was breathtakingly brought to ‘life’ on the screen, as were several other images, like a car, for instance, with glowing headlamps, concluding the spectacle with a portrait of Sri. Virendra Hegde.
Vinay, who claims to have developed the art form on his own, is perhaps the only proponent of the art form in the country. His art becomes all the more impressive considering the fact that there’s no scope for error as once the light strikes the canvas, an imprint is created.
As this art form was akin to photography in many ways, I was highly impressed by his presentation.
Next performances will be held at 18th Jan at Rotary Hall, Puttur 6.30 p.m.,19th Jan M G M College, Udupi 6.00 p.m. and 20th Jan Keremane Shambhu Hegde Rastriya Natyothsva-5, Honnavara 7.00 p.m. Don’t miss it.
